Thanksgiving

We have so many things to be thankful for! I am so thankful for this great United States of America and for the freedoms that we enjoy! May we always fight to keep those freedoms!

Thanksgiving feast slightly more expensive
According to a survey from the American Farm Bureau Federation, a classic turkey feast for 10 people will cost $43.37 this year, an increase of 56 cents, or about 1.3 percent, from last year's price of $42.91. The meal used in the survey consists of a 16-lb. turkey, bread stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a relish tray of carrots and celery, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, coffee and milk. The turkey costs $17.66, roughly 6 cents per pound cheaper than last year.

"Turkey prices are down some this year despite the fact that, according to Agriculture Department estimates, turkey production has been slightly lower in 2010 than in 2009 and supplies of turkey in cold storage are below last year's level," John Anderson, an AFBF economist, said in a statement. "This suggests that retailers are being fairly aggressive in featuring turkeys in special sales and promotions."

Anderson added that the change in price of this year's Thanksgiving meal is in line with the modest changes seen in the overall price level this year. He said that at $4.35 per person, a traditional Thanksgiving feast is still a better deal than most fast-food value meals, plus it's a wholesome, home-cooked meal.

Cost of Regulation

. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) referenced Heritage's research on over-regulation in her opening statement at a hearing of the Senate Committee on Small Business last week:
quote
I don't know how to say it any clearer: Excessive regulations are suffocating the entrepreneurial spirit of America's almost 30 million small businesses. The Heritage Foundation, which is testifying here today, suggests that this Administration has embarked on nothing short of regulatory rampage, stampeding over small business, through the promulgation of 43 new major regulations promulgated in fiscal year 2010 – imposing $26.5 billion in new regulatory compliance costs – and that's on top of the $1.75 trillion -- that's trillion with a capital "T"! -- in annual regulatory compliance costs that the Office of Advocacy recently reported.

Today is Veteran's Day! Veterans are the reason that we have the freedoms that we enjoy in this great country. When you meet a veteran, thank him/her for their service, not just today, but every day. God bless America!
